I. How to Evaluate Seat Leather Quality

1.Yellow Cowhide

Also known as Grade‑A leather, it is a widely‑used material for automotive seats. It features a fine surface and soft handfeel with barely visible pores. Robust and highly flexible, it produces aesthetically pleasing seats.

2.Water‑Buffalo Hide

Referred to as Grade‑B leather. Compared with yellow cowhide, it excels in sturdiness and wear‑resistance. Its drawbacks include insufficient softness, inferior handfeel, low flexibility, rough surface and prominent pores. Seats made from water‑buffalo hide look less attractive than those made of yellow cowhide.

3.Grade‑C Leather

Another common material on the market is Grade‑C leather, namely split leather from yellow cattle or water buffalo.

In terms of quality, appearance, price and service life, Grade‑C leather falls far behind Grade‑A and Grade‑B leather. Therefore, leather below Grade‑B is not recommended for seat upholstery.

Under normal conditions, seats upholstered in Grade‑A or Grade‑B leather can last 5‑8 years or longer. In China's usage scenarios, seats often remain in good condition even when the vehicle reaches the end of its service life or gets replaced.

Grade‑C leather's only advantage is its low price, yet it has a short service life, making it a poor choice for customers.

Regardless of leather grade, proper maintenance is critical. Without routine care, leather may wear out within only one or two years. It is recommended to condition the seats monthly and clean them quarterly for long‑term service.

Similar to polishing leather shoes, car‑seat maintenance calls for leather polish, an oil‑based agent. It forms a protective film, leaving the surface smooth and lustrous while preventing drying and peeling. Car owners can have this done at auto‑beauty shops or perform the maintenance themselves.

II. How to Distinguish Genuine from Imitation Seat Leather

Many people find leather identification challenging. In fact, comparison is a simple practical method — you can tell quality apart when you place different materials side by side.

1.Visual Inspection

High‑grade leather has a smooth surface with fine grain and bright, clean color, plus tiny natural pores. Inferior leather appears dull and grimy.

2.Tactile Test

Touching offers direct judgment. Quality leather feels soft, smooth and elastic. Leather with grainy texture and stiff, lifeless handfeel is of poor quality.

3.Burning Test

Some composite leather contains chemical adhesives added during processing. Burned samples will produce charred residues.

Note: This test applies only to raw upholstery material for refitting and cannot be performed on finished seats.

4.Wiping Test

Wipe the leather surface repeatedly with a slightly damp fine gauze. Color transfer indicates sub‑standard quality. Since seats require regular cleaning, discoloration under simple wiping means very poor wear‑resistance in daily use.

5.Stretching Test

This method works only for raw material inspection before seat manufacturing. Gently pull the leather. If stitching marks or pale under‑layers become visible, the material has poor elasticity and defective dyeing performance.
